His breakthrough came in 2002 when he was discovered by Eminem and signed to professional labels. He released his debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin‘ , in February 2003. Riding on its success, he founded G-Unit later that year and signed associates like Young Buck and Lloyd Banks.
Though his music career has slowed down in recent years, he remains one of the top selling artistes in the world, having sold over 30 million albums worldwide. In the process, he won many awards including one Grammy and 13 Billboard Music Awards.
How Much is 50 Cent Worth?
In July 2015, 50 Cent filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. He cited debts of $36 million against assets of less than $20 million. This was after he was ordered to pay $5 million to his rival Rick Ross’ ex-girlfriend, Lastonia Leviston, for posting a sex tape online.
Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows one to organize finances, as opposed to a chapter 7 bankruptcy which means liquidation of assets.
This move by 50 Cent came as a surprise considering he was once one of the wealthiest rappers in the world, thanks in part to a minority stake in Vitamin Water. The Coca-Cola Company acquired Vitamin Water in 2007 for $4.1 billion.
The rapper’s stake was estimated to be about 2.5%, with estimates placing the money he took home at between $100 and $150 billion.
In the court hearings, the rapper was also asked to explain a photo he had posted on Instagram flaunting bundles of dollars. His attorney explained that those were just props he uses for his brand marketing.
50 Cent has however managed to return to solvency. In February 2017, a US federal judge discharged the rapper from bankruptcy at a hearing in Hartford, Connecticut.
In 2016, it was revealed that 50 Cent makes around $29,000 every month from music royalties alone. That translates to about $350,000 a year, proving that the rapper was still a wealthy man even at the height of bankruptcy hearings.
50 Cent is also an executive producer of Star’s hit show Power. The average pay per salary for executive producers is $136,961 according to Glassdoor. This can rise significantly for celebrities like 50 Cent. In case of future syndication, the rapper can expect some hefty royalties too.
