Bankruptcy

In July 2015, 50 Cent filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. He cited debts of $36 million against assets of less than $20 million. This was after he was ordered to pay $5 million to his rival Rick Ross’ ex-girlfriend, Lastonia Leviston, for posting a sex tape online.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows one to organize finances, as opposed to a chapter 7 bankruptcy which means liquidation of assets.

This move by 50 Cent came as a surprise considering he was once one of the wealthiest rappers in the world, thanks in part to a minority stake in Vitamin Water. The Coca-Cola Company acquired Vitamin Water in 2007 for $4.1 billion.

The rapper’s stake was estimated to be about 2.5%, with estimates placing the money he took home at between $100 and $150 billion.

In the court hearings, the rapper was also asked to explain a photo he had posted on Instagram flaunting bundles of dollars. His attorney explained that those were just props he uses for his brand marketing.
