In accordance with Article 126 (2) of the constitution, President Uhuru Kenyatta has gazetted the first sitting of both the National Assembly and the Senate.
The law requires the President to declare via a gazette notice the date for the first sitting of the new House within 30 days after elections.
A gazette notice dated September 5, 2022, indicates that the sitting will take place on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at 9:00 am.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 126 (2) of the Constitution of Kenya, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander- in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint that the First Sitting of the Senate shall be held at the Main Parliament Buildings in the Senate Chamber, Nairobi, on the 8th September, 2022, at 9.00 a.m,”
“The First Sitting of the National Assembly shall be held at the Main Parliament Buildings in the National Assembly Chamber, on the 8th September, 2022, at 9.00 a.m,” reads the notices.
On this day the first business of the House shall be the swearing-in of the MPs and the Senators.
The MPs-elect will also be expected to elect Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
The Standing Orders of the Senate and the National Assembly separately provide that the proceedings on the first sitting of a new House shall be such that the Clerks of the two Houses sitting separately, shall read the notification of the President as published in the Kenya Gazette.
The Clerks will then present a list of the names of the persons elected as members on the table of the House and administer the Oath or Affirmation of Office.
“The Clerk shall administer the Oath or Affirmation of Office to members-elect in alphabetical order,” the Standing Orders read in part.
67 Senators(20 Nominated) and 349 Members of Parliament (MPs) who include 47 woman county representatives and 12 nominated MPs, will make up the two Houses.
