“The Woman in Maina Kageni finally comes out!”, wrote one social media user.

This after the radio presenter announced that he will be on the ballot in August battling it out with Rachel Shebesh and Esther Passaris for the Nairobi Women Rep.

The Classic 105 FM presenter made the startling announcement on social media yesterday in a video announcement.

“For more than 10 years I have sat on air and addressed issues that regard women in Kenya, it started as a joke that I need to run for women Representative. Initially, I didn’t take them seriously but I realized the demand was real, after much thought, consideration and consultation with Nairobi’s women, electorate, I have decided that this is the time to make a move,” says Maina in the video.

Watch the video above, in which Maina also showcases ‘fake’ clearance papers from IEBC and registrar of parties allowing him to run for office as an independent candidate.

According to article 97 of the Constitution of Kenya, the elective position of Woman Rep is a preserve for female candidates – and that the IEBC cannot clear men to vie for that post, and if it does, the electoral referee will be in breach of the Constitution.

The shocking pronouncement, whether a publicity stunt or a prank, has attracted wild reactions from Kenyans on social media.
