October 21, 2022

Nominated senator Karen Nyamu is over the moon after securing a role on the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations.

The controversial city lawyer turned politician has been elected the Vice Chairperson of the Committee.

Karen Nyamu took to social media this week to share the good news with her followers.

“It is indeed a huge honour to be elected as the Vice Chair Person of the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations this morning(Wednesday, October 19).

“This is an indication of the trust my fellow Committee members have in my ability to serve in this capacity over and above my role as a senator,” the mother of three noted.

The Standing Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations works to consider all matters related to regional integration, national security, foreign relations, international relations, agreements, treaties, and conventions.

Standing Order 216 (4) and (5) tasks the Committee to oversight Ministries and Departments including Defense, Foreign Affairs, East African Community and Regional Development, and the National Intelligence Service.

Karen Nyamu will be among the decision makers on matters about Kenya’s defense, intelligence, foreign relations, diplomatic and consular services, international boundaries including territorial waters and international relations as well as agreements, treaties, and conventions with other nations.

She will also be in charge of apportioning the military budget and who gets appointed as Kenyan Ambassadors, Consulars, and Commissioners to foreign countries among other duties.
