Former ‘Hapa Kule News’ Actor Fred Omondi Sues Vivo Energy Kenya

July 30, 2019

Media personality and comedian Fredrick Omondi alias Buda Boss has taken Vivo Energy Kenya to court over their use of ‘his’ popular tagline ‘Budaboss’.

The entertainer coined the stage name during his successful stint on the satirical comedy show ‘Hapa Kule News’ in 2013. Since then, Mr Omondi has used ‘Buda Boss’ as his trademark stage name on social media, advertisements and endorsements of various products and services.

He has taken issue with Vivo Energy using the tagline to market their products and wants the court to stop them.

According to a report by the Star, Omondi’s lawyer, Ms Kimeto argues that Vivo’s choice of a tagline for their products that so closely resembles her client’s is not coincidental.

In court documents, she claims Vivo’s use of ‘Budaboss’ is calculated deliberately to deceive and confuse the market into believing that its products have been endorsed by Omondi, or that Vivo is in a joint venture with her client, which is not the case.

Lady Justice Grace Nzioka, on July 24, directed Vivo to respond to the allegations in 21 days. The case will be heard on September 19.
