Residents of Meru town were on Wednesday left in shock after a gang attacked a house and killed one person and injured three others.
According to residents, it is not clear why the gang of six broke into the Mwendantu home as nothing was stolen. The attackers reportedly beat the victims ruthlessly.
The deceased was a shoeshiner in Meru Town whom residents described as sociable.
“He worked at Chogorai bus stage. We don’t know if the attackers were against the victims or if they wanted the chang’aa that was poured after it was found at the home,” said resident Violet Gatakaa.
Officers from Meru police station, led by Imenti North sub-county OCPD Sammy Koskey, found a chang’aa den at the home.
The officers poured about 3,000 litres of the illicit brew when they reported to the crime scene.
One of the victims, Geoffrey Mberia, said the gangsters had crude weapons and a rifle. He said they broke in while they were sleeping and started beating them.
“They beat us mercilessly, telling us to keep quiet. They hit me with the gun,” Mberia said.
The injured were taken to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital and the body to the facility’s morgue.
