A student leader at the University of Nairobi, in charge of the sports department of Student Organization of Nairobi University (SONU), has been accused of embezzlement of at least Sh 200,000. John Victor Ouko, alias Stitchez has also been accused of taking many women to his room before making them drunk and sleeping with them. Last week on Tuesday, students stormed into his room and made away with everything.
The students then held demonstrations on Friday demanding action be taken against Stitches and an amount totaling Sh 630,000 be refunded. SONU chairman, after a meeting with the Deputy Vice Chancellor, assured them that action will be taken. A scuffle had been earlier been witnessed with Stitches and his supporters on one side and the other students on the other side. It quickly turned tribal but security officers prevented ugly scenes.
In a letter to Stitches, SONU chairman directed that no further money will be fowarded to his department and that he should provide audited reports of the controversial events.
“I hereby refer to the  would be event dubbed TRIBE KENYA (Module 1 and 2); that was slated for the 28th of July, 2012. You received Ksh.45,000 from each of the seven campuses of the University of Nairobi, amounting to Ksh.315,000; towards the same. The main goal of the event was to foster unity among students and offer them a chance to showcase their talent.
However, there was glaring and deliberate unwillingness on your part towards a transparent realization of the same, and this was clearly observable once you got the entire sum. The students began to demand for transparency in the organization and execution of the project, but you seemed to have ignored them. Be reminded that students are keener than ever. You made a formal requisition for security for the event at Taifa Hall, from the Chief Security Officer, allegedly to hoodwink the comrades.
Furthermore, you went ahead and held a mock event at the Chancellors Court. To the best of our knowledge, this event was FULLY funded by COCA COLA as part of its promotion initiatives. Moreover, you had an illicit chance of selling to comrades, drinks at exorbitant prizes, yet the budget catered for the refreshments. What level of impunity is this? It’s untenable and you must take responsibility… Your behavior has brewed the wrath of students and I back them in demanding for accountability from your person and office…
Therefore, by the powers vested in my office by the Constitution of the Students’ Organization of Nairobi University, 2010; as the Chief Accounting Officer; I direct that you promptly furnish me with the audited reports and receipts of the controversial event you held, with a clear breakdown of the financial obligations met.’
The foregoing notwithstanding, your office and person has been slapped with the following sanctions for three consecutive months, effective immediately:
1. Your account for the money disbursed towards the event and publicize the same on the notice boards at your own cost,
2. NO event initiated by your office or person or both, shall be funded from the SONU kitty,
3.and, upon the expiry of the three months, be ready for a thorough consideration before projects from your office and person or both are approved for funding from the same kitty.”
In a reply to the chairman, Stitches categorically stated that he would not return any money. He however did not deny stealing the money. He has since differed his studies to an unknown time.
