The last time Kenyan music received international recognition was back in 2012 where hip hop group Camp Mulla was nominated for the BET awards. The young folks however did not manage to bring the award home but nevertheless flew Kenya’s flag high. That’s the closest Kenya has ever come to the coveted music awards.
Kenya is not lucky this time either as no artiste was nominated for the awards. Tanzania’s number one and East Africa’s favorite, Diamond had luck by his side as he was nominated. The Bongo crooner landed himself a nomination in the BEST INTERNATIONAL ACT: AFRICA category.
The flamboyant lad will not have an easy time as he will square it out with Nigeria’s Davido and Tiwa Savage, SA’s Mafikizolo, Ghana’s Sarkodie, and little known Toofan from Togo.
Though we do not feature in music, our Lupita is nominated in the best actress category, alongside Gabrielle Union, Kerry Washington, Angela Bassett and Oprah Winfrey.
We wish the East Africans all the best.
Here’s the full nomination list.
