Hillside Endarasha Academy Reopens as Day School After Tragic Fire

January 8, 2025

Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County has reopened three months after a devastating fire that took the lives of 21 students. This tragedy marked a pivotal and heartbreaking moment for the institution. In response, the school has transitioned to operating exclusively as a day school, permanently closing its boarding facilities.

The dormitories, once accommodating over 300 pupils, have been shut down and physically separated from the rest of the campus through the construction of a new wall. To symbolize this fresh start, the school has adopted a revamped color scheme, bringing a sense of renewal, comfort, and hope to the students, staff, and families.

As students resumed classes, parents expressed a mixture of optimism and resolve, trusting the school’s commitment to education and its longstanding tradition of academic excellence.

“Such incidents can happen in any school. We’ve encouraged the learners to focus on their studies and expect good performance from them,” said Margaret Ndirangu, a parent.

Another parent, Samuel Gitonga, emphasized the institution’s reputation as a reason for his continued trust. “I am confident the school will thrive alongside the students,” he remarked, highlighting his belief in the school’s resilience and future success.

The Ministry of Education has assured parents that the school meets all required safety and regulatory standards under its new operational model. Administration efforts have included visible upgrades and safety measures to rebuild confidence among stakeholders.

Parent Teresa Wamuyu noted an increase in enrollments, signaling renewed trust in the school. “We’re seeing new families trusting the school and enrolling their children,” she stated, underscoring the growing confidence in what the school represents.

Another parent, Ruth Ndirangu, lauded the school’s adherence to safety guidelines set by the government, sharing gratitude for the administration’s dedication to creating a secure and conducive learning environment.

On December 20, 2024, Hillside Endarasha Academy formally informed the Nyeri High Court of its decision to operate solely as a day school. This permanent shift aims to prioritize the safety and welfare of students while maintaining a focus on academic success.

Though the pain of the tragedy remains, families, students, and administrators are committed to rebuilding. The school’s strong sense of community and unwavering dedication to educational excellence serve as both a foundation and a forward path.

The journey ahead may be challenging, but Hillside Endarasha Academy stands ready to embrace a hopeful new chapter, driven by resilience and a renewed commitment to shaping brighter futures.
