A police officer who allegedly shot himself in unclear circumstances on Sunday night has been identified as the father of one of the victims of food poisoning at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls in Kakamega County.
Police Constable Maurice Tilison Chisihavi, attached to Siala Kaduol Police Station in Gem, Siaya County, was on duty when he shot himself dead in his house at the police post.
Confirming the incident, Gem Sub County Police Commander Cecilia Kemboi said: “He shot himself in the chin and the bullet exited on the upper part of the head, killing him instantly.”
“He is a teetotaler and we suspect he could only kill himself if he was distressed,” Kemboi added.
Kemboi noted that the food poisoning incident at his daughter’s school had affected him.
“His daughter is one of the victims of the Mukumu Girls High School food poisoning incident. This had greatly affected him in the last few days,” Kemboi was quoted as saying by the Star.
The officer’s daughter has since been discharged from hospital and is recuperating at home.
Police said investigations are ongoing to establish why the officer took his life.
