Court Refuses to Give Sonko Back his Money

December 17, 2021

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has been dealt a blow in his bid to get back the Sh15 million he deposited in court as cash bail.

In his application, Sonko had claimed he was broke and offered to replace the cash bail with logbooks of three high-end vehicles worth Sh30.4 million.

But High Court Judge Esther Maina of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division rejected the application.

“There is no sufficient basis for the application and it is dismissed. Moreover, the application should have been made at the trial court, not this court,” said the Justice.

Sonko had claimed that he raised the Sh15 million from friends and relatives. He claimed he couldn’t take care of his and his family’s needs since his accounts were frozen due to allegations of corruption and money laundering.

Sonko’s 10 bank accounts holding more than Sh18 million were frozen last year.
