Kakamega High School Fire: Parents to Pay Sh9,800 Each for Damages

Parents of students at Kakamega Boys High School have been ordered to cover the costs of damages caused by a fire on November 6, 2021.

In a notice dated November 11, the school’s administration said the grand total of the damages amounted to Sh21,611,360.

This means that parents of each of the 2,200 students at Kakamega School will have to pay Sh9,823.

“As per the Ministry of Transport Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works report on the burnt dormitory, the Bill of Quantities done as per assessment by the public works officer stands at Sh12,185,540.00,”  the notice read in part.

“The cost of the CCTV installation in the building is estimated at Sh695,420.00 while the cost of 280 double-decker beds is Sh.4, 194,400. Total cost for the items of the 560 students damaged by the fire is estimated at Sh4,536,000.00.”

Kakamega High management further ordered students to report back between November 15 and November 25 accompanied by their parents.

Form Four students are to report on November 15 while Forms One, Two and Three learners should return on November 21, 23 and 25 respectively.

The school said it will provide a mattress, two blankets and two bedsheets to the students whose items were burnt in the fire.
