Residents of Kimugul village, Kericho County were left in shock Sunday when a burglar committed suicide inside a house he had broken into to avoid a mob that was baying for his blood.
The deceased had broken into a house belonging to a local businesswoman who was away in church. Unbeknownst to the burglar, one of the woman’s children was in the house.
Kimugul location Chief William Sang said the man– believed to be in his thirties – broke into a safe full of money and stole Ksh84,000.
However, the child who had remained behind to herd the family cattle noticed that their house had been broken into and raised alarm attracting area residents.
Reports indicate that the deceased locked himself inside to avoid the wrath of the villagers who had rushed to the homestead to lynch him.
He is said to have picked a rope in the house which he used to take his own life.
When the residents managed to gain entry into the house, they were shocked to find the man dangling from the rafters with the money still stashed in his pockets.
They reported the incident at Chepseon Police Station. The body of the deceased was transferred to Kericho District Hospital mortuary.
