A homicide suspect who was arrested for the death of his step-son in Huruma, Nairobi earlier this month has reportedly taken his own life.
Euticus Githinji was found dead on Tuesday in a police cell toilet after other inmates informed officers that he had taken too long to come out. They said Githinji was also not responding to calls.
“An officer quickly accessed the locked door and found him hanging from the toilet roof with a jacket lace tied around his neck,” said a police officer who was on duty.
Efforts by officers to administer first aid and resuscitate him were futile. He was pronounced dead by doctors who had been called to attend to him.
The deceased was in custody for stabbing to death 18-year-old Dennis Mwema on May 8 during a domestic confrontation with his wife of eight years.
Eunice Wanza sustained minor injuries during the morning incident. Narrating the ordeal, she said Githinji, returned home drunk at around 3 am when a verbal altercation ensued.
When it turned into a fist fight, their son who was asleep woke up and attempted to stop Githinji.
The suspect then turned on his stepson with kicks and blows and dragged him into the kitchen where he stabbed him twice in the chest with a kitchen knife.
