Las Vegas was the place to be on May 2, with famous faces making their way to the MGM Grand for the ‘Fight of the Century’ between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather, undefeated in 47 fights, established his legacy as the best pound-for-pound boxer after beating Philippines hero Pacquiao in what was the richest fight in history at $300million on points.
The fight took place in front of 16,000 spectators, with the spectacle ringside looking more like the Oscars than a sporting event. Models, singers, rappers, and of course the superstars from Hollywood were pictured in Las Vegas ahead of the record-breaking bout.
A showboat-load of celebrities were spirited into ringside through a back door.
Ten grand is peanuts for the likes of Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jamie Foxx, Rihanna, Donald Trump et al.
Not all the famous boxers in the building are flush these days – certainly not Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield – but even though their tickets had to be paid for the bill for some was being picked up by promoters Mayweather or Bob Arum or private benefactors.
There were so many household names in attendance that the rest of us felt we were in thy minority and they were looking around wondering who we might be.
Former tennis stars Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, who have been married for more than 14 years, had what looked to be the best seats of all just a few rows from the front at ringside. Sportsmail understands the Las Vegas-based couple were guests of MGM and did not have to pay for their tickets.
Also in attendance were superstars such as Denzel Washington, Nicki Minaj, Paris Hilton, Jesse Jackson, Jake Gylenhaal, Mark Wahlberg and Donald Trump.
The spectacle may have looked more like the Oscars than a boxing event, but of course many sports stars also made their way into the arena. New England Patriots quarter-back Tom Brady and basketball legend Michael Jordan were pictured.
