It is now emerging that a planned visit by English Premier League giants Arsenal has been cancelled by the government.
According to Nairobi News, the government has cancelled the Magic Cup Football tournament, in which that was set to take place in Nairobi this June.
The Gunners were reportedly set to participate.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario confirmed the news, “It (Magic Cup Tournament) is a very good idea that combines both the sports and tourism aspects. Staging it is however a very expensive task, and then the timing at the moment isn’t the best. ”
The tournament was launched in 2013 by then Minister of Sports Ababu Namwamba.
The organizers; Sports Stadia Management Board and UK based consultancy Open side sports, outlined plans to have two top European clubs to play a match at Kasarani Stadium.
Arsenal and Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund were identified as the likely participants.
The cancellation of this tournament comes just months after a planned visit by Italian side Inter Milan failed to happen.
