Kenya Defence Forces – KDF Thursday conducted surgical military operations against Islamist Al-Shabaab militants west of the sea port town of Kismayo.
Kenyan troops killed atleast 57 Al-Shabaab fighters in the 8.45 am operation 31 kilometres from Afmadow, where Kenya Defence Forces have their base.
KDF artillery attack was supported by the Air force gunship helicopters.
KDF Spokesman Col Joseph Owouth said unknown number of terrorists survived with injuries.
He added that five technicals (vehicles mounted with guns) and other weapons belonging to the millitants were destroyed.
Earlier in the week, KDF warplanes had targeted an area between El Wak and Busar towns near the Kenyan border where top Al Shabaab commanders were holding a secret meeting to plot attacks in the region.
KDF warplanes also struck a convoy of Al-Shabaab vehicles heading to El Adde village to fetch water from a borehole in the area, killing several militants.
“KDF soldiers remain vigilant and will continue to relentlessly pursue the terrorist to ensure peace and security of our country Kenya, as well as support AMISOM operations in order to stabilize Somalia,” said Lt Col Njuguna.
