Kenya is finally set to do away with the ugly number plates that have been with us for decades. While other nations adopted modern looking plates, including Africa’s newest nation South Sudan, Kenya has refused to move away from the old thing.
Before the end of this year, the government will start to roll out the new plates, set to be made at Kamiti Maximum Prison. Vehicle owners will be required to pay Sh2000 for the replacement. They come with some microchip and other security features. Vehicles will now have an extra number plate displayed on the windscreen, besides the usual front and back.
For Sh1 Million, you can have a customized plate.
Transport CS Michael Kamau did not however state whether the system of assigning the numbers will be changed.
Here are some photos of the new flashier number plates.
