Six MPs allied to the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party are free after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP)f dropped charges against them.

Through a prosecution counsel, Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji, informed the court that they sought to withdraw charges against the lawmakers for the sake of dialogue and peace,

The MPs included Ugunja MP James Opiyo Wandayi, Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, Kilifi South MP Richard Chonga, and Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi.

Other political leaders were George Yogo Obure and Esther Oromi.

The six were facing charges of participating in an unlawful demonstration and malicious property damage.

They were alleged to have committed the offence on March 20 at around 10 am along City Hall way, Nairobi.

“We wish to withdraw the case under section 87A of the Penal Code to create an enabling environment for peace between the accused persons and the state. I urge that the matter be withdrawn”, the prosecution said.

Kahawa Law Court senior principal magistrate Boaz Ombewa on Monday discharged the six.

Through their lawyer Danstan Omari, the Azimio Mps thanked the State and the Judiciary for withdrawing the case

“The court has accepted to release them and their bonds will be refunded. I thank the courts for being steadfast,” Omari said.

Meanwhile, the DPP also promised to withdraw over 200 cases against Azimio supporters countrywide.

This comes after Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Sunday demanded the unconditional release of anyone who had been arrested during the demonstrations
