Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna has accused the government of using the recent LGBTQ ruling by the Supreme Court to distract Kenyans from the real issues they are facing.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Day Break Show on Thursday, Sifuna noted that the ruling only granted LGBTQ groups the right to association as stipulated in the Kenyan Constitution.
“This discussion is a total distraction…we want to move the focus of the nation from the kitchen where people are unable to feed their families to the bedroom,” he said.
Sifuna added: “It is absolutely ridiculous but I understand the people who need that distraction because the conversations about the cost of living, and energy are very difficult to have.”
The Senator said the Supreme court ruling has been blown out of proportion.
“The court has not said and did not say that these people have a right to marry…the right to association. Every person has the right to freedom of association. Every person has the right to freedom of association which includes the right to form, join or participate in the activities of an association of any kind,” Sifuna said.
The Nairobi Senator at the same time said the controversial topic exposed the Kenya Kwanza government as a hypocritical administration.
“It has exposed very serious hypocrisy because when we were protesting the decision of the Supreme Court they were telling us that this is the highest court in the land, the matter is over,” he said.
