Mombasa Motorist Runs Over Traffic Cop, Killing Him

March 1, 2023

A traffic police officer based in Mombasa died after a motorist ran him over while trying to escape arrest on Monday, February 27.

A police report indicates that Constable Julius Marwa was controlling traffic at Buxton Junction at 4:30 pm when he hailed a motorist for a traffic check.

Police identified the motorist as Jama Abdi Osman, who was driving a Silver Toyota Ractis.

According to a police report filed at the Makupa Police Station on Tuesday, the motorist defied the officer’s order.

“Abdi was asked by Marwa to turn off the engine to allow the officer to conduct a normal traffic check, but he declined,” police said.

“The action of the driver prompted the officer to open the driver’s door with the intent to turn off the ignition, but unexpectedly the driver grabbed the officer’s hand and tried to pull him inside the vehicle before driving off at high speed.”

An eyewitness reportedly told police that the motorist dragged the officer on the tarmac for about 200 meters. He then pushed the officer out of the car and ran him over using the right rear wheel.

“The officer sustained serious head injury and multiple fractures on the pelvic. He was rushed to Jocham Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” added the police report.

Detectives traced the suspect’s vehicle to a basement parking within beach road estate in Nyali. They found Jama Abdi Osman inside the car, arrested him and towed the car to Makupa Police Station.
