Meet Kiss FM/East FM Radio Presenter Nimrat Kaur

October 11, 2022

Nimrat Kaur is a 21-year-old radio presenter at both Kiss and East FM. She is also a content creator, popular on Instagram and TikTok for her funny takes on current events.

Nimrat spoke to Pooja Kotedia Patel for the Asian Arena/Nairobian.

How would you introduce yourself?

I am a radio presenter at Kiss FM and East FM, podcast curator and digital marketing enthusiast. Apparently, some people think I’m funny because of my TikTok page. I’ll let you continue being the judge of that. I love being in the creative space and music is a language for my soul.

You are one of the most popular faces and voices in the Asian Media scene. How did you get started on this path?

I always wanted to be a reporter and focus on hard news, but radio just happened. I did audition for radio while I was studying at USN and got rejected. That’s when I joined USW radio and brushed up my skills then eventually auditioned again for radio and thereafter, the journey began Before that. I worked as a model for Asian Bridal Fashion Shows.

Apart from your stint on East FM, you have now also started a banging new weekend show on Kiss FM. How did Kiss happen for you?

Kiss FM is a dream come true after almost three years on mainstream radio, lots of airchecks and practice and I managed to make my way to the weekend show.

How big is the difference between working for an Asian radio station, versus Kiss FM. How much does your content vary between these two stations?

At East FM I do the drive show; so most of my CONTENT surrounds what is happening in our country/city at that given time, which also works on Kiss FM. The only difference is entertainment content which obviously varies. On Kiss, I focus on Hollywood and local celebrity gossip including the music while at East FM, it’s tailored towards Bollywood.

How does it feel being the youngest breakfast show presenter on air, at age 21?

Great, but equally stressful. It has set some unrealistic expectations for myself, but it also taught me how to swim in the deep end.

What does a typical day in your life look like, and how do you unwind at the end of it all?

I am up at 7 am and get my chai on the gas. After that, I set an hour aside for brainstorming and working on content for my social media marketing clients. Head to work to prepare for the show. At the end of the day, I whip up dinner (or order which I need to stop doing so often) take a hot shower, read a chapter from a book, and snooze.

I am a huge fan of your social media content. Your videos are so real, and so hilarious. How do you come up with these ideas?

When I joined radio, I was told inspiration can be found all around you, I’ve trained my brain to see things from a different point of view while staying true to what opinion I formed about a particular instance or incident.

Have you ever received any flak or been trolled for your posts on social media? If yes, how have you dealt with
it?

Plenty of times. The best way to deal with trolls is to block or ignore them but sometimes I can be petty, so I will reply to them. Altogether having a thick skin and a strong belief in yourself goes a long way!

You had also done a series of shoots with Pinky Ghetani recently. Can you tell us about this collab, and what was your experience like working with Pinky?

I grew up listening to and watching Pinky, so it was an honour to work with her. We just came up with the idea randomly and decided to shoot something. This was after so many conversations through Instagram DMs where we would end up discussing current affairs but from a different point of view.

So, what next for you, Nimrat? Is media going to be where you will remain, or do you have different aspirations?

Whenever someone asks me this I wish I had a straight answer but the media has evolved quite a bit in the past 2-3 years. I’m looking to continue practising media, especially on the digital front. ‘In the near future, I’m hoping to continue improving my digital marketing skills and help businesses grow their digital brand.

What about your love life? Are you seeing anyone special?

I’m in a relationship with two people… my career and a guy, of course.
