Chandarana Employee Linked to Racist Email is Nowhere to Be Found

August 7, 2018

A Chandarana Foodplus employee who is wanted in connection with a controversial email is nowhere to be found.

Appearing before the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) on Monday, the Chandarana Foodplus management said Rima Patel has absconded duty. She is said to have absconded duty on July 27, 2018, and had not been reachable since.

Hanif Rajan, the director of operations at Chandarana, said they have tried to reach her but she has not been answering calls.

He said the marketing executive was an Indian national working on a three-month work permit. Her contract was to expire on August 6, 2018.

The NCIC chaired by Francis ole Kaparo last week summoned Ms Patel and managers to explain the context of the racist email.

According to NCIC head of complaints and legal affairs, Kyalo Mwengi, the commission will investigate the case further as it hunts for Ms Patel.

The official added that the department of immigration had been alerted to be on the lookout for the woman and not allow her to leave the country.

Mwengi added they would also investigate if it is the supermarket chain’s policy to reward their customers based on their races.

During the Monday session, Hanif Rajan pledged that his company is ready to cooperate with investigators on the matter.
