Months after taking over the helm at NTV’s ‘The Trend’ following the departure of Larry Madowo, Amina Abdi has been put on the spot by one of her guests.
Martin Nyakabete, a freelance film script supervisor/continuity person who was part of the production of the Oscar-nominated short film ‘Watu Wote’, has let his feelings known about Amina and her show in a long post on social media.
According to Nyakabete, he almost walked out of the interview because Amina was clearly ill-prepared.
“I should have walked out of the show even before I got in. Girl(Amina) had no idea who we were or our roles in the film WATUWOTE. She didn’t even know our names. There was no brief or anything even after waiting for over an hour. No research from their end about the film,” ranted Nyakabete.
He added, “When the shot (on TV) is not on her she’s not concentrating on anyone speaking but gesturing to the crew instead of paying attention (too bad as film crew you’re able to tell which shot is on air). So you tell us to introduce ourselves(epic fail), then ask too obvious questions and when we try to answer you’re concentrating on other things. As a guest that throws you off and it was so uncomfortable.”
The actor further revealed that he contemplated leaving the show but could not because his mother and her friends were watching.

“I might get crucified for this but oh well..Being a perfectionist sucks. #THE#TREND I’ll be honest, I should have walked out of the show even before I got in. Girl had no idea who we were or our roles in the film WATUWOTE. She didn’t even know our names. There was no brief or anything even after waiting for over an hour. No research from their end about the film… Oh, wait we actually put the mics on by ourselves?. For the 2nd time in my life, I sweat from my tattoo ink. The rage in me was inevitable. Have I worked my entire career for this? f*ck! Yes, f*ck… Why I’m I even here? When the shot (on TV) is not on her she’s not concentrating to anyone speaking but gesturing to the crew instead of paying attention (too bad as film crew you’re able to tell which shot is on air). So you tell us to introduce ourselves(epic fail), then ask too obvious questions and when we try to answer you’re concentrating on other things. As a guest that throws you off and it was so uncomfortable. Why not walk away..I couldn’t.. why? MUM and her friends were watching… part of my Sue&Jonnie family too & other close pals + the respect to my 2 colleagues (The moment to make everyone proud had faded) (just walk away Nyakabete)..,? but I don’t want to trend because of walking out on THE TREND.?. I love filmmaking so much it hurts. So yes I had to flow with the show and embarrass myself. Questions asked have been answered before in different interviews.. Amina Research and ask for production,
-have you watched any of the films you’re competing against…who do you think will win?
-What was challenging about bringing Watu Wote script to life?..
-Why did you want to be involved in this film?..
-Why should people watch this film?..
-What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after the film?
-if you can mention someone out by name who must come see this production?
– How is this production bringing change to our society? In short help the viewers understand what and why this film has won so many awards and why it got an Oscar nomination.
For christ sake Amina, we had our lead actor… engage her for the viewers, to help them know more about her and the film too.. I mean
-what made you take this role in WATU WOTE.
-What do you love&hate about this character?
-What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role
-Besides yourself, what celebrity would you like to see tackle this character?
-Without giving anything away, what’s your favorite line of dialogue?
-Besides yourself, which actor in this film is going to blow people away?
-If you could play any other character in this film, who would it be?
-how does it feel to be the lead actor in an Oscar-nominated film?
AMINA, AMINA, AMINA,… nimekuita Mara ngapi?…next time kindly research to help the viewers understand our Kenyan based films. I’m out. Oh that thing you made us do about receiving the awards. Total crap. That drama fest ‘trophy’ still had wet paint.
Still, WATU WOTE is a great film and I’m thankful for all the achievements so far.”
