First lady Michelle Obama has joined the masses of Washingtonians who can’t get enough of the ABC drama “Scandal,” in which the president of the United States has an ongoing affair with professional fixer, Olivia Pope, played by actress Kerry Washington.
In an interview with Ryan Seacrest that aired Thursday, Obama said she hadn’t seen the series until she took the very long flight to Hawaii for the holidays.
“I watched all the seasons, I caught up on ‘Scandal,’ I had never watched it,” the first lady said. “I love Kerry Washington, she is amazing, so it makes the show fun.”
In another nod to pop culture, FLOTUS explained why a scene from the 1995 film “The American President” would never happen.
“This is the thing about that movie…once you live in the White House you know there’s a florist in the White House. They’ve got really good flowers downstairs,” Obama said. “So why is he out there with his credit card? That would never happen.”
She’s, of course, referring to the scene where Michael Douglas, as President Andrew Shepherd, attempts to buy flowers for Annette Bening’s character, Sydney Ellen Wade, who he’s trying to court.
For her own Valentine’s Day, Obama said she and the real American president would be going “low key” this year after the first lady’s big blowout 50th birthday celebration in January.
“It feels like we just finished celebrating my birthday, so I think we’ll low-key it,” she said.
