The ongoing drama at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) took another amusing twist on Wednesday when Ezra Chiloba found the door locks on his office had been changed.

The embattled IEBC CEO turned up at his 6th-floor office in the afternoon and that is when it dawned on him that he is still unwanted at the electoral body.

He was also informed that the IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati had traveled abroad with the keys to the changed door lock.

“I came back but I couldn’t access the office… The doors are locked. Of course, I can’t force myself back but I hope this matter can be resolved through courts or in any other way,” Chiloba told journalists.

Chiloba said he had gone to Anniversary Towers to submit a letter responding to his 3-month suspension by Chebukati.

“I came to bring a letter responding to the suspension letter issued to me by the chairman. He is not in the office. So I dropped the letter and went to see Commissioner Guliye for a chat,” said Chiloba.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court on the June 14 allowed Chiloba to resume his duties after he was suspended in April but Chebukati suspended him again just hours after the Court order.

In a letter dated June 14, 2018, Chebukati said Chiloba was still suspended to allow for the completion of a comprehensive audit on major procurement relating to the August 8 general election.

“As you are aware under clause 3 and 5, of your employment contract you are responsible for the prudent financial management of the commission finances. As well as execution of all commission programmes. The issue under investigation are weighty and touch on your role as the accounting officer,” the letter to Chiloba read in part.
