Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana believes that Kenya poses the toughest challenge for Cameroon in the race to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Five-time champions Cameroon will host Harambee Stars on October 7, with the return match scheduled for a week later in Group ‘J’.
“Kenya is the only team in our group that is giving us competition, but I hope we make it to the qualifying round. Zimbabwe’s game was a little bit hard but we came out with a good point,” Onana stated.
He spoke at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, Uganda, after the Indomitable Lions played to a goalless draw against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
On the same day, Kenya claimed a 2-1 victory over Namibia, placing them at the top of Group ‘J’ with four points, tied with Cameroon, who have an inferior goal difference. Zimbabwe trails in third place with two points from their two goalless draws against both Kenya and Cameroon. Namibia sits at the bottom of the group without a point, having lost 1-0 to Cameroon in their opener and 2-1 to Kenya in their second match.
Confident in his team’s abilities, Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has warned Cameroon that they will not have an easy match.
“Cameroon should consider how they want to tackle us. I am not afraid of Cameroon,” the Turkish coach asserted.
Due to a lack of stadiums meeting FIFA and CAF standards, Kenya will host Cameroon next month and face Namibia away in November.
In Uganda, Onana interacted with Manchester United fans, who urged him to improve on his blunders to help the team in the English Premier League.
“I was amazed by the warm welcome and love shown to me by Manchester United fans here in Uganda,” Onana remarked.
