Demonstrations on Thika Road After Driver and Conductor Charged For Sunday Blasts

On Sunday, along the Thika Super Highway, two buses plying Githurai and Mwiki route were blown using ‘Improvised Explosive Devices’ (IEDs), where scores were injured and two feared dead. The drivers and conductors of the two buses were charged at the Makadara Law Courts on Tuesday for failing to prevent the killings by failing to search passengers as required.
James Munene and Anthony Mutua, the driver and conductor respectively of the Mwiki bound bus pleaded not guilty to the charge. Robert Gakuru, Geoffrey Gakunyi and Joshua Wambugu who were the driver and conductors of the Githurai bus respectively also denied the charge.
The five were released by Chief Magistrate Emily Ominde on personal bonds of Sh5 million each and two sureties of similar amounts while scheduling the mention of their cases for May 20 and the hearings for July 17 and 22.
Their arrests did not go down well with their colleagues, who demonstrated and blocked sections of Thika Road on Wednesday. They argued that it is the police’ job to provide security and it would be impossible to conduct thorough searches on all pedestrians.
Fares along Thika Road were subsequently hiked.
