In Gazette Notices dated Friday, August 14, EPRA set a Fuel Energy Cost Charge of KSh3.51 per kWh, a Foreign Exchange Fluctuation Adjustment of KSh1.1777 per kWh, and a Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA) levy of KSh0.015 per kWh.
Together, the adjustments add up to KSh4.7027 per kWh for meters read in August 2026. EPRA said the rise, particularly in the fuel energy component, reflects electricity generated and purchased from various power plants during July.
EPRA said the data used to set the fuel charge covered generation from diesel, geothermal, thermal, and other power plants, as well as electricity imports.
“PURSUANT to Clause 1 of Part III of the Schedule of Tariffs 2023, notice is given that all Prices for Electrical Energy specified in Part II of the said Schedule will be liable to a Fuel Energy Cost Charge of Plus 351 Kenya cents per kWh for all meter readings to be taken in August 2026,” one of the notices stated.
EPRA’s schedule shows that some of the highest fuel costs were recorded at isolated thermal power stations. These included North Horr at KSh396.12 per kWh, Rhamu at KSh363.18 per kWh, and Baragoi at KSh346.75 per kWh.
In addition to the fuel charge, EPRA announced a foreign exchange fluctuation adjustment of KSh1.17 per kilowatt-hour. The authority linked the increase to exchange-related costs incurred by participants across the electricity supply chain.
EPRA reported that exchange gains and losses totaling about KSh1.353 billion were recorded across the sector, involving KenGen, Kenya Power, and independent power producers.
The regulator added that the rise in August electricity costs also reflected the hydropower levy. Under this component, consumers will pay an additional KSh0.015 under the Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA) levy.
EPRA further clarified that the extra charges are separate components of the electricity tariff. They do not represent the full amount consumers pay per unit, since electricity bills also include other approved tariff components, as well as taxes and levies.
