City Hall has decided to purchase an office block for Members of County Assembly (MCAs), in what they say is a move to save money.
The building will be bought using the Sh1.53 billion set aside in the development budget, according to Chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee Robert Mbatia. The building will be located near City Hall.
“We will purchase a building close to City Hall next year using part of the funds under the development budget for the assembly,” said Mr Mbatia.
Of the 85 elected MCAs, 53 are operating from rented offices across the city, paid for by City Hall. Further, 32 offices are dilapidated and in need of urgent repairs.
Sh400 million had initially been set aside for the construction of a new building, but that plan has been shelved with the administration determining that there is no land for the construction.
The Sonko-led administration hopes that owning a office block for the MCAs will free up funds which can be better used for development purposes.
