Two matatu operators who allegedly caused the death of a student along the Thika Superhighway have been charged with murder.
Amos Muigai Mwangi and Alex Musembi Musyoka were on Monday arraigned in court where they were charged with the murder of Doreeen Kinya Mwiti on June 13, near Queen of Apostles Church on Thika Road.
They, however, did not plead to the charge before Justice James Wakiaga. This is after the court was told that the second accused person — Alex Musembi Musyoka — did not have a lawyer.
The High Court judge directed that the accused person be assigned a lawyer to allow for proceedings. Judge Wakiaga deferred the plea to July 19.
The latest development comes two weeks after the family of the deceased accused police of an attempted cover-up.
“The police are hiding something. It’s not possible that my daughter tried to throw herself out of a moving matatu. She was a humble girl who never looked for trouble. My heart is heavy because I had so much hope in her,” said Doreen’s father, John Mwiti.
Post-mortem results indicate that Doreen suffered a broken skull and sustained bruises on her arm and face as well as a broken arm.
She was a second-year student at the Nairobi Institute of Business Studies (NIBS).
