A non-governmental organization -Family Health Options Kenya (FHOK)- is looking to find 100 brave Kenyan men who are willing to undergo a vasectomy next week.
The chop will be part of this year’s World Vasectomy Day (WVD) commemoration. The day is marked worldwide in November with an aim of encouraging men to shoulder part of the responsibility for family planning.
In Nairobi, a four-day vasectomy celebration will be held from April 23-26 at Family Health Options Kenya (FHOK) clinic in Phoenix House, located on Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi.
FHOK is seeking to perform 100 vasectomies under the campaign “100 Kenyan Men to Rise Up For Their Families, Their Wives, and Our Future.”
The vasectomies will be free of charge and transportation services will also be covered.
“The challenge is real, but working as one, we are confident we will find the 100 heroes in Kenya,” the organization said in a statement.
Leading the medical team are two special guest vasectomists from the US, Dr. Doug Stein and Dr. John Curington both leaders of NSVI (No Scalpel Vasectomy International). Jonathan Stack, co-founder of World Vasectomy Day will grace the celebrations.
Also attending will be George Mbogah, winner of WVD’s Man of the Year award for 2016, who did his vasectomy six years ago.
“It is now almost six years since I had my vasectomy and I no longer fear the financial burden of more children nor the well-being of my wife due to multiple pregnancies. I might have been amongst the first men to choose this path, but we are now hundreds and growing,” said Mbogah.
On November 18th, 2016, 74 Kenyan men underwent the chop as part of the celebrations held at the Kenyan National Theater.
“And we all return again, from April 23-26, to show that when men learn about the simplicity, safety, and effectiveness of a vasectomy, they rise up to share responsibility with their wives,” said the doctors.
A vasectomy (male sterilisation) is a surgical procedure to cut or seal the tubes that carry a man’s sperm to permanently prevent pregnancy.
It’s usually carried out under local anesthetic, where you’re awake but don’t feel any pain, and takes about 15 minutes.
In rare cases, you may have a general anesthetic, where you’re asleep during the operation.
Vasectomies are said to be more than 99% effective.
