University of Nairobi student leader Paul Ongili Owino alias Babu Owino was yesterday arrested for causing a disturbance at the Kilimani Police Station.
The controversial student leader was at the station to demand the release of equally controversial city businessman Chris Obure.
Kilimani OCPD, Mr Peter Kattam said Owino matched to the police station on Thursday morning in the company of a male colleague and started hurling insults at police officers.
He came to Kilimani Police Station at 8am seeking the release of Mr Chris Obure. But he got abusive in his demands and that is when we arrested him for disorderly conduct,” Mr Kattam said.
Chris Obure was arrested on Wednesday for threatening to shoot a reveller outside B Club in Kilimani on New Year’s Eve. He is accused of beating and injuring Ben Alila and his cousin.
The businessman who claims to be a gold dealer was arraigned in court on Thursday and released on Sh20,000 cash bail.
His case will be heard on March 9, 2017.
Meanwhile, Babu was released on a KSh10, 000 police bond.
Speaking after his release, Babu denied he was at the police station to demand the release of Chris Obure.
“No, I did not go to demand the release of Chris Obure. Police in Kilimani had arrested a comrade last evening on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. I mobilized several youth, who accompanied me to the station, where we demanded that the right procedure be followed in apprehending our fellow student.
“However, officers on duty harassed us, which made me lose my cool and slap one of them. That is when I was arrested,” Babu Owino told eDaily.
Babu also accused Kilimani DCIO Phyllis Kanini of unfair treatment. He claimed that the DCIO has a personal vendetta against him and pushes for his arrest even when he has not broken the law.
“The Kilimani DCIO seems to have something personal against me because of the way she has been handling my cases,” said Owino as quoted by Citizen Digital.
“She was solely behind my arraignment in court today even after officers at the Kilimani police station agreed to release me after my arrest Thursday morning.”
