Nairobi’s skyline transformed into a giant canvas on Wednesday night as 500 illuminated drones took to the skies above Nyayo National Stadium, delivering a spectacular display that celebrated Kenya-China relations and the expanding ties between China and Africa.
Billed as the largest drone show ever staged in Kenya, the choreographed light performance used hundreds of synchronized drones to weave a visual narrative encompassing friendship, culture, sports, wildlife, infrastructure, and trade. The spectacle anchored activities marking the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, an initiative aimed at deepening relations between China and African nations through social, cultural, and community connections while commemorating 70 years of China-Africa diplomatic relations.
As the drones ascended over the stadium, they first illuminated the official logo of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, a handshake symbol representing friendship and closer bilateral cooperation.
The aerial formation then shifted to recreate the Kenyan flag, rendering its black, red, and green colors alongside the central shield and crossed spears. Shortly after, the drones formed the East African Community flag, placing regional integration and shared development at the heart of the show.
The drone show then introduced playful cultural fusion, showing a Chinese Terracotta Warrior kicking a football, marrying an ancient symbol of Chinese civilization with one of Kenya’s most beloved sports.
Sports themes continued to dominate the next segment. The drones outlined the Raila Odinga Talanta Sports City Stadium, a flagship sports facility currently under development with Chinese backing. Moments later, a long-distance Kenyan runner appeared in light, honoring the country’s global athletics dominance, before transitioning into a footballer in motion.
Ahead of the aerial show, delivered by Shenzhen HighGreat Innovation Technology Development Company, Kibera All Stars faced Kariobangi All Stars in a warm-up football match that reinforced the sporting theme.
Transitioning from sports to nature, the display brought Kenya’s natural heritage into focus. A running cheetah materialized in the night sky before morphing into a hurdler, creating a striking visual that linked wildlife heritage to track-and-field success. The drones then sculpted Kenya’s iconic “Big Five” – a lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and leopard – in seamless succession.
The display also spotlighted key infrastructure projects that serve as major milestones of Kenya-China development cooperation. Illuminated tracks and a moving locomotive brought the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway to life, illustrating a cornerstone investment under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Next came the outline of the Thwake Dam, highlighting its role in water supply, power generation, and irrigation, followed by the Nairobi Expressway, whose name sparkled prominently above the city.
The tone shifted gracefully as a giant panda appeared above the stadium, serving as a warm symbol of goodwill from China. Trade took focus next, depicting coffee beans and tea leaves surrounding a steaming cup alongside the words “Zero Tariff” to showcase initiatives aimed at expanding market access for African exports to China.
The show culminated in a sequence honoring China itself, forming Beijing’s Tiananmen Gate in golden light before displaying “CHINA” and “KENYA” alongside two red hearts that merged into one, symbolizing over six decades of diplomatic ties and a shared commitment to future collaboration.
The drone show formed part of a broader itinerary in Nairobi designed to strengthen public diplomacy between China and Africa.
Earlier in the day, more than 130 representatives from government, civil society, international organizations, business, and the media gathered for the Second China-Africa Civil Society Public Welfare Exchange Forum. Discussions focused on actionable areas of cooperation, including healthcare, skills development, child protection, women’s empowerment, and community resilience.
