The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested an ICT officer at the Cooperative University of Kenya for allegedly demanding a Kes50,000 bribe to alter a student’s grades ahead of the December graduation.
The officer, identified as Evans Matiro Watenya, allegedly requested the bribe to fix a discrepancy in the student’s exam results on the university’s online portal.
The student, initially awarded Second Class Honours Upper Division, noticed her classification had been downgraded to Second Class Honours Lower Division without explanation.
When the student sought clarification, Watenya allegedly demanded a bribe to correct the error. Unable to raise the amount, the student reported the matter to EACC, prompting an investigation.
EACC set up a sting operation and arrested Watenya on Friday evening within the university compound after he accepted Kes30,000, part of the requested bribe.
He was taken to the Integrity Centre Police Station for processing and later transferred to Kilimani Police Station, awaiting arraignment.
