President William Ruto has pledged expanded government support for informal sector workers, announcing a state-funded artisan certification programme and an Sh80 million equipment fund designed to help skilled workers boost their livelihoods.
Hosting artisans at State House, Nairobi, on Thursday, the President explained that the initiative targets experienced individuals who acquired their expertise through practical training and apprenticeships but lack formal credentials, empowering them to secure job opportunities and contribute to national development.
Certification to Open Doors to State Projects
Ruto highlighted that official certification will help a broader pool of artisans access major state projects, particularly the Affordable Housing Programme, which demands vast skilled labour.
“We have a government programme and the funding is already available. If you are a skilled worker who already has the practical skills but does not have a certificate, we are ready to support you,” Ruto said.
To complement the training push, the President allocated Sh80 million toward purchasing essential tools and equipment for artisan businesses, urging workers to compile lists of their operational needs so the government and local leaders can distribute the resources effectively.
“I will arrange how you will get the equipment to run your crafts and businesses. I want you to prepare a list of the equipment you need, and then we will plan with these leaders how we will provide those tools. I will give Sh80 million to buy equipment for you so that you can do your businesses,” he stated.
Ruto Pledges Crackdown on Gangs to Protect Traders
Addressing broader economic security, the Head of State reassured traders and artisans that the government will continue establishing a safe business environment free from fear and intimidation.
He vowed that security forces will clamp down decisively on criminal gangs to restore public order across the country.
“We are going to have a secure country, and all Kenyans will run their businesses without fear. The same way we dealt with terrorists and cattle rustlers is the same way we will deal with goons,” Ruto promised.
