Only in Kenya: Man Cooks Dog for “Eating his Chicken”

September 9, 2019

Before you jump to conclusions, this story did not happen in Kakamega or wherever you’re likely to find members of the chicken-loving Luhya community.

It happened in Tharaka Nithi County where a man was arrested for allegedly slaughtering and cooking a dog on Thursday last week.

Initial reports had it that one Mr Martin Munene slaughtered the canine out of hunger but Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner Beverly Opwora intimated that the accused sought retribution against the dog for eating his chicken.

“There have been reports about a man who allegedly cooked a dog due to hunger. I want to strongly refute these reports. The man had earlier recorded a statement with the area chief that he committed the act because the dog had eaten his chicken,” the county commissioner told Citizen Digital.

Mr Munene was arrested at his home in Karimba village where police found him boiling part of the dog meat in a sufuria. Other body parts had been stored in the house.

In his defence, the accused said he made a meal out of the dog because he was hungry. Munene claimed he had not eaten for three days and was preparing to accompany the dog meat with Ugali.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji later ordered for his immediate release, further directing County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) to liaise with the County Commissioner to provide the man with adequate food.
