A Master’s student at the University on Nairobi has been arrested for extorting money from Members of Parliament.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested the student, 30-year-old Alex Anyolo on Wednesday. He is accused of sending threatening messages to Njoro MP Charity Kathambi Chepkwony, who lodged a complaint with police.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said Mr Anyolo had been sending threatening messages to five other lawmakers.
“Mr Alex Anyolo had been sending threatening messages to the complainant and five other MPs with intent to extort,” the DCI said in a tweet.
Adding, “The suspect, who had already received money from another member of Parliament, admitted to sending the messages with intent to extort money.”
Detectives recovered handsets, identity cards and several assorted SIM cards, including one that was used to send the messages.
Further investigations are ongoing.
