Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has written to the Parliamentary Service Commission seeking permission to fly Business Class, claiming she cannot fit in the standard aircraft seats in the Economy Section, the Sunday Standard reports.
According to reports, the matter was discussed at the PSC meeting on July 14 and subsequently rejected.
Insiders argued that accepting the frivolous request would have opened an avenue for all MPs to demand preferential treatment on non-issues.
“It is true the Senator wrote a letter which the commission rejected on the grounds that we cannot give everyone who is well-endowed special treatment. This will give other MPs with different challenges to put demands on us,” an unnamed senior official at the commission was quoted as saying.
Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye could not confirm or deny the matter: “It would not be in order to discuss details between the commission and the members with a third party or give documents.”
Officials reportedly indicated that they were taken aback with the unusual request but admitted that the senator was within her rights to make the request.
Omanga has, however, denied writing the letter stating she was not aware of anything pertaining to it.
“I am not aware of what you are talking about,” she said.
She further took to social media to blast the Standard newspaper for “poor journalistic practices where readers are inundated with sensationalized stories.”
Naturally, the report has attracted furious reactions from Kenyans on social media, with some blasting Millicent Omanga as a drama queen.
Nominated (a seat given for free) senator Millicent Omanga, complains economy seat too small for her. Business class is mostly legroom but her arrogance is too much. Also, she can use her own money-Sh1.2 million salary, two economy class seats and spread her entitlement there. pic.twitter.com/N8ueMA61YB

Another reminder to us @kot that majority of our politicians are driven by self interests. Hizi nominated seats and women rep seats need to be scrapped!

I’ve always had issues with this Senator. She’s a little too full of herself. She adds no value to the gender debate and equality per see.
