Three oil tankers on Tuesday exploded in an illegal yard in Ruiru’s Adva Estate near Toll Station, Kiambu County.

The 10 pm incident sparked panic as area residents saw fire and smoke coming from the yard before hearing a series of loud explosions.

Three tankers were completely razed down while the fourth one caught fire on the front part. Drums and other items of unknown value were also burnt down.

Confirming the incident, Juja OCPD Peter Manyasi said no one was injured during the accident. He said investigations into the cause of the fire had commenced.

According to reports, the suspicious looking makeshift yard was completely cordoned off and not even the press were allowed access as oil is said to have leaked to the trenches right outside the yard.

Police warned that there was still a possibility that another fire could be easily triggered, explaining that the measures were meant to ensure public safety.

Area residents intimated that unknown people have been using the yard to siphon oil from the tankers and into barrels and drums.

The residents further said they have on several occasions smelled gas emanating from the yard which they claim is an illegal siphoning point.
