On Wednesday, CORD leader Raila Odinga and his son Raila Junior, accompanied by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and several coast MPs witnessed the commissioning of ‘Fidel Odinga Road’ in Mombasa.
Joho had promised to name a road after Fidel shortly after he died in January last year.
The road was renamed from ‘New Nyali Road’ amidst opposition from Jubilee supporters in the county. Local politician Matano Chengo said that it was not right to name the road after Fidel while Mombasa has “very famous individuals who deserve that kind of honour”.
“Why haven’t they renamed any road after Mazrui? We also have other prominent individuals like Mekatilili wa Menza who deserve that honour,” he said. “What contribution did Fidel make for Kenya leave alone Mombasa? We are demanding that signpost be pulled down and the road given another name.”
Raila asked the youth to follow Fidel’s example in inspiring change in Kenyan society through simple acts of kindness to those in need.
