The new ultra modern security screening yard at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is open.
Work on the new facility started after the infamous ‘electric bulb’ explosion at a coffee shop in the airport, and the subsequent exposé on the lax security measures by a local TV station.
When fully operational, the screening yard is expected to eliminate the police officers who manually check vehicles at the entrance.
Apart from increasing security, it will increase the speed of vehicle screening.
The new screening yard is part of the government’s plan to have direct flights to the US later this year. The Americans require maximum security at foreign airports before allowing them direct access to theirs.
President Uhuru Kenyatta passed by the yard while on his way to Ethiopia on Saturday and we have the photos.
