Five people were yesterday arrested in Ol Kalou in Nyandarua County, for manufacturing artificial milk. This was after a crackdown conducted by the Kenya Dairy Board.
Over 12,000 litres of the artificial milk was seized during the operation.
Apparently, the suspects had been mixing water with dangerous chemicals such as formalin, hydrogen peroxide and urea.
Formalin is the chemical used to preserve bodies in mortuaries.
KDB manager incharge of Naivasha region, Hellen Mbugua, said that the concoction was being distributed in various towns especially Nairobi and Nakuru. She revealed that KDB had been investigating the syndicate for the past one month.
“We have been receiving these complaints from residents and that was why we launched the investigations. This is a business that has been going on for some time now,” she said.
She warned Kenyans to be very cautious when buying milk, as the practice is believed to have spread to other regions.
