Passengers using the refurbished Syokimau train were on Wednesday left in shock after it stalled a few minutes after departure from the ultra modern railway station.
The train had left the station at 7 am only to stop even before reaching the main Nairobi – Mombasa track. For almost 40 minutes, passengers most of who had taken advantage of the promotional free parking, were left with no option but to watch as they got late for work.
A distress call made by the crew revealed that the engine had lost pull power. Coach supervisor Ambrose Bulera assured passengers that another engine was on its way from the Makadara Station in Nairobi’s Eastlands to pull the coaches to the Central Railway Station in the city centre.
Syokimau Railway Station is running an opening offer, where a return ticket is going for only Sh 100, against the Sh 220 it will cost. Motorists are also getting free parking, before the station starts charging Sh 80, billed as Sh 300 – parking and return ticket.
The train service is however not living up to its hype, but it may be forgiven as it’s still in its first week. It is hardly keeping the stipulated time, inconveniencing punctual passengers.
