DCI detectives on Monday gunned down three suspected highway robbers after they had allegedly hijacked a United Nations (UN) official at Mukuyuni area in Machakos County.
The suspects were part of a five-man gang that has reportedly been impersonating traffic police officers along major roads. On Monday, they were stationed along Machakos – Kitui Road where they were ambushed by DCI sleuths in the afternoon.
The detectives who had been following the robbers based on information received from their previous victims cornered them at Makuyuni. The suspects declined to surrender and instead opened fire at the officers prompting an exchange of fire.
Two of the suspects managed to escape, with the DCI detectives rescuing the UN official who had already been handcuffed by the gang.
Police recovered a pistol, several rounds of ammunition, traffic police uniform and a vehicle that the suspects were using.
According to the DCI, the gang poses as cops on major highways before handcuffing their victims & stealing their motor vehicles.
