Nairobi senator Mike Sonko yesterday wrote to the CID about some conmen using his name to extort money on Facebook.
Sonko gave actual examples of victims, each having lost several thousands. One female victim was conned Sh 4000, in the hope that she would get a job.

Here was Sonko’s letter.

16th September 2013 To the DirectorCID Headquarters,Cyber Crime Department,Muthaiga Nairobi,Kenya.  RE: REQUEST FOR ARREST AND PROSECUTION OF FACEBOOK IMPOSTERS USING MY NAME ‘MIKE SONKO’ TO CON KENYANS Reference is made to one of the victim Petronila Muia Mobile No.0719xxxxx0. She was conned by imposter using my names on facebook as Mike Sonko and convinced to assist her to secure a job. After several conversations with imposter she sent some amount of money via M-PESA as quoted.  ‘DQ97AX268 Confirmed. Kshs 4,000 sent to JOSEPH OBONDO 0724946652 on 3/7/13 at 11:51 AM New M-PESA balance is Ksh970.00. DR07XD381 Confirmed. Now since we’ve read the above letter, lets take a few minutes and laugh out loud… Seriously who still sends money to secure a job?
Am of the opinion that instead of celebrities decrying impostor conmen, they should decry some Kenyans ignorance.
