Motorists using Nairobi’s Outer Ring Road have been advised to expect temporary traffic disruptions on Saturday, August 8, after Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) announced a planned partial road closure.
In a traffic advisory released on Thursday, August 6, KURA said the closure will run from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm to allow for the removal of a gantry installed along the busy corridor.
KURA said the affected stretch sits near the Airport North Road interchange, where contractors will carry out the removal work for about four hours.
The authority listed several estates likely to be affected, including Huruma, Mlango Kubwa, Kiamaiko, Kariobangi North, Kariobangi South, Dandora, Buru Buru and Umoja 1.
Additional areas expected to feel the impact include Umoja 2, Umoja Inner Core, Tena, Donholm, Pipeline and Embakasi, all of which depend on the Outer Ring Road as a major transport route.
KURA said motorists should note that the authority will partially close the Outer Ring Road on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm to facilitate the removal of a gantry at the location indicated in an attached sketch.
The authority said it will manage traffic in phases to reduce disruption, with a full closure occurring only during the actual gantry removal. From 12:00 pm to about 3:00 pm, contractors will place machinery at the site while vehicles continue moving at restricted speeds. Between 1:30 pm and 2:00 pm, KURA will fully close the affected section to allow for safe removal of the gantry. Between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm, the contractor will demobilise equipment, after which KURA will reopen the road, with motorists required to drive at reduced speeds.
Motorists have been advised to follow instructions from traffic police and marshals at the site and to use alternative routes where possible to avoid delays.
The Outer Ring Road remains one of Nairobi’s busiest routes. It runs for about 13 kilometers from the Thika Superhighway at the GSU headquarters in Ruaraka to the Eastern Bypass near Taj Mall.
The dual carriageway provides a critical link between the city’s northern and eastern areas, helping motorists bypass the Central Business District, particularly during peak congestion.
