Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has secured a unanimous election as Vice Chairperson of the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC), stepping in following a reshuffle of Senate committee assignments.
Cherargei replaces Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma, whom the Senate reassigned to the County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee. Meanwhile, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang retains his seat as Chairperson of the powerful oversight panel, which scrutinizes the Auditor-General’s reports on county finances to safeguard public funds.
“I want to assure members that we will work together to ensure we properly perform our role of checking county governments,” Cherargei pledged following Thursday’s vote.
Kajwang’ welcomed his colleague back to the leadership team, expressing confidence in their joint oversight mission.
“I am happy to have you back again as my vice chairperson. Let us work for the people,” Kajwang’ said.
The reorganization, approved by the House in line with Senate Standing Orders, also brings Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo and Lamu Senator Joseph Githuku onto the committee. They replace Mwaruma and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, both of whom have moved to other committee dockets as part of the broader effort to boost parliamentary effectiveness.
As one of Parliament’s primary watchdog bodies, the County Public Accounts Committee examines financial audits to ensure transparency, accountability, and prudent spending across Kenya’s 47 county governments. Cherargei’s return to the vice-chairmanship adds experienced leadership as the panel deepens its scrutiny of devolved funds.
