The country woke up to the shocking news on Monday, that Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore had passed on.
The well respected head of East Africa telco giant has been suffering from cancer for a while, but Kenyans generally thought it had been contained.
In October 2017, Collymore took a sick leave and proceeded to the UK for advance treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He returned in July 2018 and resumed his duties.
Since then, he had been receiving treatment locally at Aga Khan University Hospital.
In a statement released by Safaricom, Collymore succumbed to the cancer in the early hours of Monday morning.
Media personality Jeff Koinange was one of Collymore’s close friends. In an interview hours after his death, Jeff revealed that they had in fact hang out two days ago on Saturday.
He revealed that Bob knew his time was up, and that doctors had advised him not to make any long-term plans. He had been informed that he would be lucky to make it past July.
Bob Collymore was 61 years old. He will be buried tomorrow, Tuesday July 2, at a private ceremony in Nairobi.
There will then be a public memorial service later in the week.
May he rest in peace.
