Three suspected militants on Thursday morning reportedly died after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they were planting went off in Boni Forest, Lamu County.
Sources who spoke to Nation said the incident happened between 0030 hrs and 0200 hrs at Kwa Omollo along Bodhai-Baragoni road.
At the scene of the accident, body parts of two of the militants were found strewn all over while the third victim was found buried in a bush about 500m away.
Three loaded AK 47 magazines, 12 loose rounds and magazine pouch were found at the scene.
Security agencies were deployed to patrol the area as investigations continue.
The incident comes days after two other suspected terrorists sustained injuries when a bomb detonated in Likoni town, Mombasa County.
The suspects were making the explosive on Sunday night when it went off at around 10 pm in Swabrina estate in Likoni.
Anti-terror police unit responded but the two had already been rushed to a private hospital which declined to treat them without knowing the source of their injuries.
One of the suspects escaped while the other one was taken to Likoni District Hospital where police caught up with him. Upon interrogation, he claimed they were injured after an unknown person threw a hand-grenade into their house.
However, anti-terrorism police combed the house and found debris that contradicted his claims.
Police also arrested parents of the suspect who escaped.
“We have received reports one of them was jailed for three years and another four years and we are investigating that,” Likoni OCPD Benjamin Rotich said
